Trojans Neurological Trust is

Making a difference in the lives of South Africans living with various neurological conditions

Who we are

Trojans Neurological Trust (TNT) was set up in 2007 when Justin Jeffery, a biokineticist with a special interest in neurological rehabilitation, saw that there was a desperate need for physical rehabilitation of individuals with neurological conditions. These individuals often require many forms of physical therapy and unfortunately the cost of comprehensive neurological rehabilitation is exorbitant for many South Africans. Therapy often needs to continue for many years following the injury or onset of condition. Very often patients are discharged from hospital with minimal follow up care, support or tools to achieve independence. TNT saw the need to cater to this group of South Africans who can achieve so much more in their physical and cognitive rehab if the financial barrier was removed.

TNT became a registered NPO in 2017 with the aim of extending our reach to help more people and add more avenues for care. The majority of our beneficiaries have sustained a traumatic brain injury (TBI), acquired brain injury or spinal cord injury as a result of a motor vehicle accident, sporting accident, stroke or assault. TNT is aimed at providing funding to underprivileged patients, who show commitment and desire to rise above their circumstances. We strive to help our beneficiaries reach their goals in being as self-sufficient as possible as well as to live happy and fulfilling lives as functional members of their communities.

"The only disability in life is a bad attitude"

Our Story...

TNT has been utilising the 947 Cycle Challenge for the past 15 years as a fundraising event for the charity – whereby the charity encourages supporters to join the charity bond and ride the race in support of those who can’t. TNT presents 5 chariots pulled by supporting members. These chariots pull some of the charity’s beneficiaries throughout the hills of Joburg, during Joburg’s toughest cycle race, to raise awareness and funding towards Spinal & Neurological Trust Rehabilitation. Along with the chariots we have 2 tandems who take part with a brain injured individual as one of the tandem members. This shows how committed people are to improving their circumstances, and bettering their physical ability through exercise. However in spite of the 947 Cycle Challenge being a major sporting event where TNT can showcase its work, we’ve branched out into other sporting codes and challenges whereby we not only raise awareness and funds for neurological therapy, but we also empower the individuals who have struggled with a neurological impairment to do some of these events with us, assisted by us. Events include Midmar mile swim, triathlons, cycle events , mountain biking, marathons and other life changing events.

Meet our TNT Warriors

Simon Manghnye

Simon Manghnye suffered a T5-T8 spinal cord injury in a motor vehicle accident in 1999. Simons main goals of therapy are to reduce spasms and his dependance on his medication as well as independent standing and assisted walking.

Simon started therapy in August 2020.

Progress Simon has so far made has reduced his spasms greatly and improved his sitting balance. He is now able to sleep on both sides without spasms affecting him and can stand in a standing frame unassisted.

Ernest Khumalo

Ernest Khumalo suffered a stroke while at work which has resulted in a right side Hempilegia. Ernest’s main goals of therapy are to regain function in his legs and arms and be able to walk again.

Ernest started therapy in June 2022.

Ernest’s progress has been a rapid improvement which has seen him move from a wheelchair to a walking stick and now he is independently walking.

Margaret Mapoga

Margaret suffered a stroke at the end of November 2021. The stroke resulted in Margaret sustaining a left-side hemiplegia.

Rehabilitation focus is mainly unilateral movements as well as midline movements.

Margaret is able to stand in the standing frame, parallel bars as well as make use of other equipment with the aim to make her more independent and improve her quality of life.

Andre Fourie

Andre Fourie is a former sky diver currently residing in Pretoria.

Andre is a quadriplegic as a result of an aeroplane crash which lead to a spinal cord injury in February 2021. The level of injury to his spine is at C6/C7 which left both his arms and legs affected.

A few of the components focused on in the sessions include muscle strengthening, seated balance, flexibility, and gait retraining in the robotic Ekso skeleton. The aim of the rehabilitation is to improve Andre’s independence and quality of life.
